Comments: Troopers,
Wilson B. Fields died yesterday 22 Oct 12. As I recall, Ben resided in Cleveland, Oklahoma with his extended family. He had Native American heritage and had research his family history extensively to include relatives in the Civil War. I remember him as a * * * sure SFC that rolled in to the 919th with a promise to straighten things out. I didn't realize at the time he had been with the 919th a year or so earlier and suffered an injury that required a lengthy hospitalization. At the time, he said he had worked with ARVN forces in an advisory capacity.
All his Squad Leaders and all the Third Platoon Red Devils loved and respected him. My friend Fred Sheetz and Ben were separately medically evacuated from 13Aug69 Quan Loi NVA assaults. They last saw each other in a hospital in Japan. My only true accomplishment in life was getting them back together.
Thanks, Sergeant Fields, for keeping your platoon strac.
