Comments: Dave Tessier, RIP..
I read that my respected friend Dave Tessier has died. The Blackhorse never had a better friend and supporter than Dave. The beautiful Blackhorse memorial at the Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs exists in large part because of the work of Dave, and Costos Rambocos. Dave was Reunion Chairman at Colorado Springs in '93, and my wife and I had the priviledge of visiting him and Sandy. Dave was a career NCO, and we always got a laugh out his reassignment to Alaska, following his tour with H Company. You could not find a better man, anywhere. Throughout his struggle with cancer, his optimism and character always shone brightly. Rest in Heavenly Peace, my brother.
A Livingston, California native, Steve was born Stavros Siphakis on Thursday, August 14, 1919 to Harry and Louise Siphakis.
His name was changed to Joseph at the age of 4 when his father naturalized.
His request for a peaceful transition was honored and he went to be with the family he loved so much on Wednesday, January 9th at Mercy Medical Center Merced.
Not one for the classroom, Steve left school at the age of sixteen to help support the family as they struggled in the depression era of 1935. Along with his brothers, George and Alex, he farmed and ran the dairy at the Day Ranch just outside of town.
On his return from the military, along with farming, Steve owned and operated Steve Joseph Trucking until 1963 when he went to work for John Roth Chevrolet, retiring in 1982.
Steve at the age of 23 he intered the U.S. Army wednesday, January 28, 1942 and was assigned to the 11th Cavalry "B" Troop, at that time they still the horse cavalry. It mechanized shortly after he entered to become the Tenth Armored Division. He proudly served under the leadership of his hero, General George Patton 11. As a armored tank commander, he survived the "Battle of the Bulge" W.I.A. critically injured later during an ambush.
He was honorably discharged on Thursday, December 13 1945.
He married the love of his life, Zelma Rae (Tootsie) Hill on Monday, February 10, 1947. They made their life in Livingston, California until 1975, when they moved to Catheys Valley, California.
He returned to the central valley in 2005 after a long illness to live out his days at Castle Vista in Atwater, California.
Steve is survived by his wife, Zelma Rae, Atwater, son, Patrick, Catheys Valley, daughter, Peggy Potter, son-in-law, Robert, Winton, and sister, Harriet Vaughn, Grants Pass, Oregon. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Louise Joseph (Siphakis), siblings, Cleo Katsounakis, Athena DiBartolo, Georgia Lagovardos, Zoie Markantonis, George and Alexander Joseph, and son, Nicholas.
A visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 17 with a Chapel Service starting at 10:00 am Friday, January 18, 2013 at;
lvers and Alcorn Funeral Home 3050 Winton, Way Atwater, California 95301 (209)358-4931
The burial will follow at Winton District Cemetery.
